The Private Reserve Natural Heritage (RPPN) is the only category of conservation units recognized by the Brazilian Government. Owners who recognize the ecologic importance of these reserves, and effectively engage in Nature and biodiversity conservation efforts in Brazil do establish these Reserves. By this voluntary act, owners take upon themselves the commitment to protect the area.
Once the property becomes a RPPN, the status of the protected area is perpetual, even though property rights are maintained. The owner can market the area, but funds appropriation will be for conservation purposes.
These reserves main goal is the protection of biological diversity, scenic beauty, water resources and other natural attributes.
Recreational, touristic, educational and research activities are allowed provided prior authorization by the environmental agency in charge of their recognition, and shall be foreseen in its management plan.
RPPNs are extremely important for the conservation of nature in Brazil. They contribute to the increase of protected areas, are strategic in CU (Conservation Units) buffer zones, and collaborate with the formation of ecologic corridors and the increase in landscape connectivity.
Considering the fact that an important part of vegetation is located in private land, it is of utmost importance that owners take an active part in biodiversity conservation.
