Instituto L\u00edbio<\/strong> was founded with the mission to protect wildlife<\/strong>, preserve biodiversity<\/strong>, and restore threatened ecosystems<\/strong>.
We operate across four of Brazil\u2019s richest and most vulnerable biomes<\/strong> \u2014 the Amazon Rainforest<\/strong>, Atlantic Forest<\/strong>, Cerrado<\/strong>, and Pantanal<\/strong> \u2014 managing nearly 40,000 hectares of private natural reserves<\/strong> integrated with public Conservation Units<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We develop structured programs for the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals<\/strong> affected by trafficking and abuse<\/strong>, promote ecological restoration<\/strong>, implement agroforestry systems<\/strong>, prevent environmental degradation<\/strong>, and safeguard essential ecosystem services<\/strong> such as water<\/strong>, soil<\/strong>, climate<\/strong>, and life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Raquel Machado<\/strong>, originally from Minas Gerais<\/strong>, is a dermatologist<\/strong> and a lifelong animal and nature lover<\/strong>. During her childhood, she maintained a deep bond with nature<\/strong>, which she sought to rekindle after moving to S\u00e3o Paulo<\/strong> and becoming a mother.<\/p>\n

    While searching for a property close to nature, she found a riverside area on the Tiet\u00ea River<\/strong> in Porto Feliz, S\u00e3o Paulo<\/strong>, where she encountered an abandoned parrot<\/strong>. Outraged by its condition, she reached out to environmental authorities<\/strong> and discovered the harsh reality of Brazil\u2019s wildlife trafficking crisis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In 2010<\/strong>, with authorization from Ibama<\/strong>, she founded a Wildlife Maintenance Center<\/strong>.
    After a decade of dedicated work, she established the Instituto Raquel Machado (2020)<\/strong>, which later evolved into Instituto L\u00edbio (2023)<\/strong> \u2014 a name that merges LIberty<\/strong> and BIOdiversity<\/strong>, and honors her grandfather<\/strong>, a defender of the Amazon and nature since the 1940s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
